Kayakers find this section to their liking. This is the backcountry Smokies where your only companions will likely be the stars at night and perhaps a stray bear. West Prong Little Pigeon River is a stream in Tennessee and has an elevation of 879 feet. I recommend a nine foot fly rod on this stretch. The little brown trout shown above is only a fraction of the size of the large ones that exist in Little River. The planned works of improvement include best management practices to reduce streambank erosion and nutrient loading from livestock access to streams, and measures to reduce erosion and sedimentation from eroding pastureland. From Elkmont upstream, Little River is on the left side of the trail for about the first three miles. The upper reaches of the Middle Prong can be accessed by foot trails while the lower almost 4 miles can be reached by road. The USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) publishes a set of the most commonly used topographic maps of the U.S. called US Topo that are separated into rectangular quadrants that are printed at 22.75"x29" or larger. The Middle Prong of the Little River in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is formed by the confluence of Lynn Camp Prong and Thunderhead Prong in the area of a former logging town named Tremont. Above Mannis Branch, Millsap Bottoms is the only other place before the turnoff to Elkmont where you can park off of the road. At Elkmont, another tributary, Jakes Creek, enters from the west. The best park streams for smallmouth fishing include East Prong of Little River from where it enters the park near Townsend to the Sinks and Abrams Creek from its embayment with Chilhowee Reservoir to Abrams Falls. That said, if you prefer a three weight you’ll probably catch just as many trout. The East Prong of Little River is generally just referred to as “Little River” by locals. The East Prong of the Little River starts inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) on the north slope of Clingmans Dome. Here's what I found out. In about 100 yards turn left on Tremont Rd to continue up the Middle Prong. East Fork Little Pigeon River is situated east of Cherokee Hills, close to Hodsden Bridge. It drains portions of three national forests— Chattahoochee, Nantahala, and Cherokee— and provides the southwestern boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Townsend 'Y' is created by the confluence of Little River (flowing from the east) and Middle Prong of Little River (flowing from the west), which create a powerful stream that flows north. This section features all of the hatches and quality of fishing as the lower reaches below Elkmont. The Little River is approximately 60 miles long and very scenic. The further up the trail you go, the smaller the stream will become and the fewer people you will see. There is a nice parking area across the road on the right. Near the headwaters, small plunge pools in these freestone streams hold lively populations of native brook trout that eagerly take well-presented flies. The Middle Prong Little River is a scenic stream with long pools, in the lower reaches, punctuated with many runs and riffles and is suitable for all anglers, including kids (this is where I'll be heading with my 3 boys). The number of wild trout in this stretch gets better by the mile. Brook trout numbers increase noticeably as the river starts to finally climb steeply at between five and six miles from the trailhead. You can use this graph to get an indication of stream flow conditions on all prongs of the Little River. Often shut down because of bear problems, I recommend taking bear spray if visiting this site overnight. This trail is the access to Fish Camp and Goshen Prongs and crosses Little River just above the junction with Fish Camp Prong. The nature of the stream changes above Elkmont though, and there are not as many large brown trout. It is also impounded by Cheoah Dam in North Carolina, and by Calderwood and Chilhowee dams in Tennessee. The entire watershed of the Middle Prong is loosely known as Tremont. Little River is now a significantly smaller stream. Save this section for early mornings and late in the evening except in the cooler months. East Fork Little Pigeon River East Fork Little Pigeon River is a stream in Tennessee and has an elevation of 919 feet. Unfortunately this is one of the sections that suffered from the drought years of 2007 and 2008. This is a very rugged section of river with huge pools and dangerous rapids. This bridge is a great place to stop and take a water or lunch break. Enterprising anglers fishing Little River here have to bushwhack upstream from this point to continue fishing. As you drive upstream, at between four and a half and five miles, you will see a large pullout on the right overlooking the stream. Trout are stocked from Walland upstream when water temperatures allow. There is a USGS stream gauge on the Little River located in Townsend, TN just  upstream of the GSMNP boundary. If you want a variety of fish species and conditions, the Middle Prong of the Little River above Tremont is a great option. Little river continues to flow another 4 miles to the Elkmont Campgrounds and the confluence with Jakes Creek. Access is very difficult to dangerous below the Sinks and should not be attempted when the water is high. Large pools are much fewer although not nonexistent.
